Generous Funding from Australian and New Zealand Governments Transforms School Facilities
Turarana Community High School recenlty marked a significant development with the unveiling of a new girls’ dormitory and ablution block, generously funded by the Australian and New Zealand Governments in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.
The special handover event, held on 1 March 2024, commemorated the completion of this education infrastructure project. Valued at SBD 2.4 million, the project, executed by Niu World and finalized in November 2023, aims to enhance the school’s facilities, offering accommodation for female students and additional classroom space. With 138 girls and 158 boys among the 296 enrolled students, the improved infrastructure promises to create a better learning environment for all.
The handover event, attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD), Australian High Commission (DFAT), New Zealand High Commission (MFAT), and the school community, signifies the successful completion of the project. Turarana Community High School now stands better equipped to meet the educational needs of its students with enhanced infrastructure.
In Solomon Islands, 64% of schools lack or have limited access to drinking water, while 63% lack sanitation facilities, and an alarming 75% lack access to hygiene services. These figures underscore the pressing need for comprehensive initiatives to address water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) challenges across educational institutions nationwide.
