Ghumu community opens a new footpath linking villages, schools, markets and health centres with support from China
On June 30, 2026, the Ghumu community celebrated the official handover of their new footpath project.
This vital rural infrastructure was co-funded by the Ngella Constituency Office and the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
“The project involved construction of a durable pedestrian footpath about 300 meters through swamp terrain and dense forest, providing safe and reliable access for women, youth, and farmers,” Constituency Development Officer (CDO) Robert Manebona said.
He added that the new pathway connects Ghumu to nearby communities, schools, health centres, and markets, strengthening community ties and boosting rural trade.
Member of Parliament Honourable Choylin Yim Douglas and a representative from the PRC Embassy, Counsellor Zhao officially handed over the footpath to the community.
During the ceremony, MP Douglas and the PRC representative Counsellor Zhao emphasized the importance of partnership in delivering projects that directly improve rural lives.
Community leaders expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the footpath will reduce travel time, enhance safety during the rainy season, and create new opportunities for education, marketing, and networking.
“The Ghumu Footpath Project symbolizes friendship and cooperation between the People’s Republic of China and the people of the Solomon Islands, reflecting Ngella Constituency’s commitment to rural development and empowerment,” CDO Manebona added.
Mr. Manebona, on behalf of the constituency office and communities, thanked PRC for the generous support and looks forward to more support and collaboration in the future.
The Ngella Constituency provided hardware materials, freight, and labor, amounting to approximately $300,000 under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) program while the PRC contributed $100,000.
The footpath serves a population of about 1,000 people in the area.
