The Member of Parliament for East Honiara, Morris Toiraena, has been elected as the new Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament of Solomon Islands.
Toiraena was elected unopposed after nominations for the position closed at 4:00pm on Sunday, 11 May. Clerk to Parliament Mr. Jefferson Hallu confirmed during Monday’s sitting that only one nomination was received.
The nomination was submitted by Jimson Tanangada, MP for Gizo/Kolombangara and Minister for Police, National Security and Correctional Services.
“I am satisfied that the Member for East Honiara is eligible for election as Deputy Speaker under Section 64 of the Constitution,” Hallu told Parliament. “I am also satisfied that the nomination meets the requirements of the Standing Orders and is therefore valid.”
In line with parliamentary procedure, the Clerk officially declared Toiraena as Deputy Speaker.
Speaker of Parliament, Patteson Oti, congratulated Toiraena and wished him well in his new role.
In his remarks following the announcement, Hon. Toiraena expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to serve with commitment.
“I am honoured and humbled to accept this important role,” he said. “I thank the Speaker, the Prime Minister, and all Members of Parliament for the trust and confidence placed in me.”
He acknowledged the responsibilities of the position and assured members of his dedication to the role.
“With your support and cooperation, I am confident I can fulfil this duty with commitment to serve both Members of Parliament and the people of this nation,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker’s position became vacant following the appointment of the former holder, Cathy Nori, as Minister for Women, Youth, Children, and Family Affairs.
