One body recovered after Gold Ridge landslide as RSIPF and GRML continue recovery efforts and investigation
A dead body has been recovered after a landslide at Pit 1 at Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML) in Central Guadalcanal this morning (28 July 2026) around 10 am.
Officers of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) and GRML Security personnel are working together on a recovery plan for the sad incident.
The RSIPF and GRML Security are working collaboratively on the recovery action plan and handed over the dead body to its immediate family for proper burial. The deceased is Mr Ashley Olo, from Central Guadalcanal.
Acting Commissioner of RSIPF Mr James Aitorea said confirming how many are still buried underground is still too early at the moment, but the RSIPF and GRML Security are working together on the recovery process plan and will keep updating us.
Acting Commissioner Mr Aitorea said locals in the vicinity should stay clear of the site as recovery efforts continue and an investigation into the incident begins.
Commissioner Aitorea said the landslide occurred at around 2 am on 27 July 2026, which covered an estimated area of 100 metres of the western access road leading into the Pit 1.
Mr Aitorea said RSIPF and GRML security personnel are working closely with the locals to move them out from the Pit 1 while recovery action is carried out.
The RSIPF would like to share its condolences with the immediate family members for the loss of their loved ones.
