Solomon Islands filmmakers will compete on a regional stage after Tavuli News secured the country’s place in the inaugural People of the Pasifika 48-Hour Film Challenge.
The regional competition will take place in September. It is organised by Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited through its Pasifika on Air programme.
The Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Solomon Islands will each field five filmmaking teams.
Tavuli News will coordinate the Solomon Islands competition and select five teams to represent the country.
PoP48 Film Challenge Process
Tavuli News will open applications for local filmmakers in the coming days. Five teams will earn places in the national challenge.
Selected teams will attend workshops during August before the competition begins.
The challenge will run from 4 to 6 September.
At the start of the competition, every team will receive the same theme, line of dialogue and prop. Teams must include all three in their films.
Each team will then have 48 hours to write, film and edit a short film lasting between four and six minutes.
All creative work must happen during the competition. This includes writing, filming, editing, sound production, visual effects and titles.
Each team will receive filmmaking equipment for the challenge.
PoP48 Film Challenge Across the Pacific
Twenty teams from the four participating countries will compete at the same time.
Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited will screen all completed films on its platforms. Viewers will then vote for their favourite film.
The winning team will receive the first People of the Pasifika 48-Hour Film Challenge title. The team will also travel to Hawai’i to attend a filmmaking masterclass.
PoP48 Film Challenge Supports Young Filmmakers
Pasifika on Air General Manager Nicole Rex-Taofinu’u said the initiative would help emerging Pacific filmmakers develop their storytelling and production skills.
“It is also an opportunity to connect young Pacific storytellers with the local broadcasters Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited partners with, as the media environment evolves with changing technology and the desire for different types of content,” she said.
She said strong interest in the inaugural challenge showed there was growing demand across the Pacific for opportunities to tell local stories and build filmmaking skills.
