Makira-Ulawa signs MoU with WCS to strengthen marine conservation, fisheries and ocean governance

The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), together with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM), and the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (MFMR) today marked a significant milestone in strengthening ocean governance in Solomon Islands through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between WCS and the Makira-Ulawa Provincial Government.
The MoU establishes a formal partnership to support the implementation of the Bezos Earth Fund Project in Makira-Ulawa Province. It provides a framework for collaboration to strengthen marine spatial planning, support establishment of marine protected and conservation areas, improve fisheries management, support sustainable livelihoods, enhance provincial capacity, and promote integrated ocean governance. The signing reflects the shared commitment of the National Government, the Provincial Government, and WCS to work together to protect Makira-Ulawa’s rich marine biodiversity while ensuring that coastal communities and resource owners continue to benefit from healthy and productive ocean ecosystems.
Through this partnership, WCS will work closely with the Provincial Government, national ministries, communities, traditional leaders, women, youth, and other stakeholders to support marine spatial planning, strengthen community-based resource management, improve and scientific knowledge, and contribute to Solomon Islands’ national development and ocean policy priorities.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Mr Chris Waiwori, Provincial Secretary of Makira-Ulawa Province, welcomed the partnership. “Today’s signing marks the beginning of a stronger partnership between Makira Ulawa Provincial Government and WCS. By working together with our national ministries and our communities, we are creating opportunities to protect our marine resources while supporting sustainable economic development for future generations.”
Representing MECDM, Deputy Director Conservation, Trevor Maeda highlighted the importance of provincial leadership. “This MoU is more than an agreement; it is a commitment to work alongside government and communities to protect our oceans. Strong partnerships are essential to achieving lasting conservation outcomes and improving the wellbeing of coastal communities.”
Deputy Director Provincial, Malasy Malakia from MFMR emphasized the importance of coordinated implementation. “This MoU provides a practical platform for coordinated action that supports sustainable fisheries, healthy marine ecosystems, and resilient coastal communities.”
The partners reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining close collaboration throughout the implementation of the project and ensuring that communities remain at the centre of conservation and sustainable development efforts.
