World Bank reviews progress on SIRAP2 aviation projects and infrastructure upgrades in Honiara
The World Bank Environment and Social Framework Unit Practice Manager (ESF PM) has completed a series of technical visits to project sites at Henderson, Honiara, to monitor progress under the ongoing Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2).
The visits, which commenced on 26 May 2026, focused on reviewing civil works implementation, supporting environmental and social safeguards issues, and strengthening coordination among government partners, contractors, and consultants. The World Bank team, accompanied by the SIRAP2 Project Support Team (PST), the contractors, and the supervision consultant, inspected the Air Traffic Control Tower, Fire Service Station, and Aviation Complex Building sites.
The team expressed satisfaction with the significant progress achieved on the two major projects currently under construction and commended the completion and handover of the modern Fire Service Station – a milestone that strengthens aviation safety and security in Solomon Islands.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA), Mr. Alwyn Danitofea, acknowledged the continued support from the World Bank and project stakeholders:
“The progress we are witnessing today reflects the strong partnership between the Government of Solomon Islands and the World Bank. These infrastructure developments are critical for improving aviation safety, operational efficiency, and service delivery for our people.”
Mr. Danitofea added that the modern aviation facilities currently under development will help Solomon Islands meet international aviation standards while supporting long-term economic growth and connectivity.
SIRAP2 is funded by the World Bank and jointly implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) and MCA. Building on the achievements of the original SIRAP project, SIRAP2 focuses on enhancing road and aviation safety, improving climate resilience, and supporting sustainable transport connectivity across Solomon Islands.
