PM Matthew Wale receives a traditional Welcome to Country in Canberra, marking the start of his Australia visit
PRIME Minister Matthew Wale and his delegation were today formally welcomed to Australia’s capital through a traditional Welcome to Country ceremony.
This marks a respectful and culturally significant start to the Prime Minister’s official visit.
The ceremony was conducted by Ngunnawal leader, Aunty Serena an elder of the Ngunnawal people.
Aunty Serena welcomed the Prime Minister and his delegation sharing the significance of the welcome to country and smoking ceremony.
Prime Minister Wale acknowledged the deep spiritual connection between the Traditional Custodians and the land on which the nation’s capital stands.

Prime Minister Wale expressed his appreciation for the honour bestowed upon him and his delegation.
He said the ceremony is a powerful reminder of the enduring traditions and values of Indigenous peoples.
“We are deeply honoured to be welcomed onto this land by its Traditional Custodians. This ceremony reflects the strength of culture, identity and respect that continues to guide communities across the Pacific and Australia,” the Prime Minister said.
The Welcome to Country included traditional elements such as cultural expressions and, where customary, a smoking ceremony symbolising cleansing and safe passage for visitors.
The ceremony sets a respectful tone for high-level engagements scheduled in Canberra this week, where Prime Minister Wale and his delegation will meet with Australian leaders to advance bilateral cooperation and deepen longstanding ties.
