Government prepares long-term recovery plan for Western and Choiseul communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila
The Solomon Islands Government is developing a medium- and long-term recovery plan for communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila in Western and Choiseul provinces.
National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Director Jonathan Tafiariki said the government, through the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination, is establishing recovery committees to guide the rebuilding process.
“The government, through the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination, is working on establishing response committees to develop medium- and long-term plans for the provinces affected by the cyclone,” Mr Tafiariki said.
He said resources have already been deployed to help stabilise the situation, restore access to essential services and support communities as they rebuild their livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Western Province Premier Billy Veo has called on the national government to accelerate recovery and relief efforts.
According to the Solomon Star News Paper, Premier Veo urged the government to prioritise the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure, including water supply systems, schools, health facilities and roads on Gizo Island.
He also called for recovery funds to be managed transparently and directed to affected communities.
“We cannot afford further delays. Our people need tangible support now to rebuild their lives and secure their future,” Premier Veo told the Solomon Star.
The recovery planning comes as communities in Western and Choiseul provinces continue to rebuild following the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Maila.
