Heritage Park Hotel cuts emissions and energy costs with a major solar investment and other sustainability initiatives
The General Manager of Heritage Park Hotel said the hotel has implemented many initiatives which others can follow if they have not considered them already.
While “going solar” with its new installation of 837.90 kw of solar panels and its 2250kwh of storage is its biggest investment and has done more for the planet than its other projects it’s a case of every little bit helps. Mr Sanjay Bhargava said today.
Our solar project has been in our minds for many years and we are thankful to local company GEL (Guadalcanal Electric Limited) owned by Luis Chin and to Global Greens Australia for the supply and we are thrilled to have it operating and saving about 90% of our electricity costs. In terms of carbon emissions this initiative has reduced carbon emissions to the extent of 198.13 equivalent to saving of 80.34 tons of standard coal or 58,000 litres of diesel and equivalent to planting 10,825 trees.
Over the last 5 years or more the hotel has moved to LED/CFL bulbs, motion sensors.
The hotel moved from solar hot water systems which are backed up by electricity to heat pumps which are the most efficient way to provide hot water. This initiative reduced carbon emissions at the property by 81.2%
Even replacement of the iron press from for gas to electric ironing machine has reduced emissions by just on 23.3 kg for each 4 hours of use.
Mr Bhargava said in his 16 years at the hotel he has watched the water at the hotels sea wall and its getting slowly higher. While the increment of rise is not an issue for the hotel it is a signal and verification of the problem of a warming planet.
“The Board of Heritage Park Hotel are very supporting of management initiatives in this very important fight against global warming. We must all do what we can.” He said.
