SICCI welcomes east Honiara bus relocation to ease CBD traffic congestion and improve business operations
Honiara, Solomon Islands – The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) has welcomed the Government’s decision to relocate east Honiara buses from the Central Market area, describing it as a positive step towards easing traffic congestion and enabling smoother business operations in the capital.
The announcement, made by Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) officials, contractors, and police, confirms that buses travelling to east Honiara will now operate from the MID pool area next to the Honiara City Council roundabout. The changes take effect tomorrow afternoon.
This development follows sustained advocacy by SICCI on behalf of its members to address worsening traffic congestion in Honiara’s central business district (CBD), which has directly impacted business transactions, employee productivity, and the efficient movement of goods and services.
SICCI has been engaging with Government stakeholders, including the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Honiara City Council, and police authorities, to highlight the urgent need for traffic flow improvements.
The Chamber has consistently raised concerns that unchecked congestion around the Central Market area disrupts supply chains, delays deliveries, and increases operational costs for businesses.
SICCI CEO Mr James Dolarii said SICCI has long advocated for practical, on-the-ground solutions to Honiara’s traffic challenges and the relocation of east-bound buses away from the congested Central Market area is a direct outcome of constructive dialogue between the private sector and Government.
“This is a clear example of how public-private collaboration can deliver real benefits for commuters and the business community alike.” Mr Dolarii stated.
SICCI notes that the new arrangement is expected to deliver several positive outcomes for the business community such as:
Reduced Congestion – Removing east-bound buses from the Central Market area will ease bottlenecks, allowing for smoother traffic flow during peak business hours.
Improved Access – Businesses located in and around the CBD will experience more reliable access for staff, suppliers, and customers.
Safer Environment – Separating bus terminals from high-pedestrian zones reduces safety risks for commuters and market vendors.
Continued Construction – The relocation allows major road works to proceed without delay, bringing forward long-term infrastructure improvements.
SICCI acknowledges the cooperation of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Honiara City Council, and the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force in implementing this change.
The Chamber remains committed to working with Government to address other infrastructure and traffic management challenges affecting the private sector.
Only buses travelling to GPPOL and Henderson will remain at their current location opposite the Honiara City Council headquarters.
Authorities have urged commuters and drivers to cooperate with the new arrangements during the construction period.
