PM Matthew Wale reaffirms education as the foundation for national prosperity and future development
PRIME Minister Matthew Wale has reaffirmed that lasting national prosperity begins with investing in people, highlighting education as a central pillar of the Government’s development agenda.
“A nation cannot build lasting prosperity unless it invests first in its people,” the Prime Minister said.
Delivering his Independence address this week, the Prime Minister said the true wealth of Solomon Islands lies not in its natural resources, but in the minds, hearts and hands of its people.
He emphasised that education remains a top priority for the Government, describing it as “the great equaliser” and a critical pathway to opportunity for every child regardless of background.
The Government has committed to progressively introducing free education from Early Childhood Education through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as at Solomon Islands National University commencing in January 2027.
“This is not merely an investment in students but an investment in the future of our nation,” the Prime Minister said.
He stressed that no child should be denied access to education due to financial hardship.
Prime Minister Wale also highlighted the importance of preparing young people for a rapidly changing global environment shaped by technological advancement, innovation and climate challenges.
“To this end, the Government has initiated key reforms within the education sector including the introduction of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Innovation (STEMI) and a restructuring of the sector to strengthen focus, leadership and outcomes,” he said.
While embracing modern knowledge, the Prime Minister stressed that education must also instil strong values, including integrity, humility and respect for culture and faith.
“Education must prepare our young people not only to earn a living but to live honourably, serve faithfully and lead wisely,” he said.
