Central Province Premier meets PM Matthew Wale, pledging support for provincial empowerment and government reforms
PRIME Minister Matthew Wale today received a courtesy visit from the Premier of Central Province Hon Kenneth Sagupari and members of his Executive.
Premier Sagupari applauded the Prime Minister and his Government for their commitment to re-strengthen partnerships with provincial leaders.
The Central Province Premier commended the Prime Minister for his inspiring Independence Day address, describing it as a speech that openly addressed the core issues affecting the country.
The Premier noted that it was refreshing to hear a national leader speak candidly about the challenges facing Solomon Islands and welcomed the Government’s “change is coming” message.
He expressed his province’s strong support for the Government’s policy direction and pledged to work closely with the national government moving forward.
“We are with you,” the Premier said, while also praising the Prime Minister’s vision and direction for empowering provinces and driving national progress.
In response, Prime Minister Wale reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to empowering provinces and restoring their capacity to deliver essential services.
The Prime Minister outlined plans for the Government to provide machinery and equipment to provinces and to revive the Public Works Department (PWD), enabling provinces to undertake more of their own infrastructure work.
Prime Minister Wale said the Government is also of the view that provinces must establish and strengthen their own business arms to drive commercial activity and economic growth at the local level.
“We must weed out corruption and ensure that our resources benefit our people,” the Prime Minister said.
He urged provincial leaders to remain focused and disciplined, advising them to prioritize key development areas and make decisions carefully and responsibly.
“We all need to do the right thing, one decision at a time,” he said.
The Prime Minister reminded the Premier and his executive that all public office holders are ultimately public servants, tasked with serving the people and the country with integrity.
He reiterated that the Government’s reforms are aimed at liberating the economy and the mindset of Solomon Islanders.
“Our goal is to empower our people to believe that positive change is possible and that together we can build a better future for our country,” Prime Minister Wale said.
