A Milestone for Rennell and Bellona: Labour Mobility Program Aims to Address Unemployment and Drive Development.
Rennell and Bellona Constituency has launched its first labour mobility program with Canada, marking a significant step toward creating new opportunities for its population of just over 6,000. The initiative is part of a broader effort to address unemployment and boost economic development in one of the country’s most underdeveloped constituency.
Community members have expressed optimism about the program, which aims to provide access to employment opportunities abroad. It is also expected to help reduce the province’s reliance on remittances from Honiara.
Member of Parliament for Rennell and Bellona, John Tuhaika Jnr, who assumed office less than six months ago, played a key role in initiating the program. Tuhaika Jnr, a former World Bank consultant specializing in international law, governance, and economic development, has prioritized addressing unemployment in the province.
“Two months into office, we conducted a household survey, and the findings showed that more than 70% of the population are unemployed,” Tuhaika Jnr said. “This is concerning, and we promised to take action. This program is one of the achievements we are proud to deliver for our people.”
Tuhaika Jnr encouraged the province’s residents to take advantage of the opportunity and work hard to achieve their goals.
The Solomon Islands joined Canada’s Labour Mobility Program eight years ago, with Guadalcanal Province being the first to participate. The program is administered by the Canadian International Training & Education Corp (CITREC), which provides training and placement for participants.
During the launch event, CITREC Chair and Solomon Islands Honorary Consul-General Ashwant Dwivedi highlighted the program’s demands. “This is not a vacation,” Dwivedi said. “It requires hard work, dedication, and discipline. Those who fail to meet expectations will be sent back.” He urged the people of Renbel to approach the program seriously and make the most of the opportunity.
Rennell and Bellona Province, known for its unique raised coral atolls and a UNESCO World Heritage site, faces significant development challenges. With limited economic activities, the labour mobility program is being seen as a potential catalyst for economic improvement.
Tuhaika Jnr described the program as a chance for residents to create better futures for themselves and their families, both at home and abroad.
The official launch event took place at Cowboys Bar and Grill in Honiara, where Honiara residents of the Rennell and Bellona consituency gathered to mark the milestone.
The labour mobility program is anticipated to provide tangible benefits for Rennell and Bellona, offering its residents a pathway to economic empowerment and a stronger future.
