PM Matthew Wale backs Higher Salaries Commission, rejects MP pay rise and calls for fair public sector reforms

Prime Minister Matthew Wale has reaffirmed his long-standing policy position on the determination of salaries for Members of Parliament.

This follows the recent decision by the Parliamentary Entitlements Commission (PEC) to increase MPs’ emoluments.

Prime Minister Wale stated that his Government remains committed to undertaking constitutional reform to replace the current PEC framework with a more comprehensive and equitable mechanism.

He said the proposed reform will establish a Higher Salaries Commission, mandated to determine the remuneration of all public sector employees, not just Members of Parliament.

“This reform reflects our commitment to fairness, transparency and consistency across the public service,” Prime Minister Wale said.

“Salary decisions should not be isolated to one group but considered within the broader context of the entire public sector.”

The Prime Minister indicated that the constitutional amendment is targeted for completion by the end of 2027.

He noted that responsible ministries require sufficient time to undertake the necessary consultations, technical work and legislative processes.

In the interim, Prime Minister Wale has called on the PEC to exercise careful judgment and take into full account the ongoing cost of living pressures faced by Solomon Islanders when deliberating on MPs’ remuneration.

“The realities facing our people must remain at the forefront of any decision-making process,” he emphasized.

Demonstrating personal leadership and accountability, Prime Minister Wale also confirmed that he will forego the recent salary increase awarded by the PEC.

“This is a time for responsible leadership. I believe it is important to show restraint and solidarity with our people during these challenging economic times,” the Prime Minister said.

He said the Government remains committed to advancing reforms that promote equity, fiscal responsibility and the long-term interests of all Solomon Islanders.
