Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele departed on Saturday, 24 August 2024, to join his regional counterparts at this year’s Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM) in the Kingdom of Tonga. Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Mines, Energy, and Rural Electrification, Bradley Tovosia, along with other ministers and officials, were present at Honiara International Airport to see the Prime Minister off.
In Parliament on Thursday, Prime Minister Manele emphasized the significance of Solomon Islands’ participation in the regional gathering, highlighting the country’s readiness to host the next PIF Leaders Meeting in Honiara in 2025.
This year, from 26-30 August 2024, Tonga will host the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, chaired by the Tongan Prime Minister, Hu’akavemeiliku Siaosi Sovaleni. The meeting will focus on moving beyond policy discussions to implementing strategies that build resilience and foster transformation. Resilience, which aligns with the seven thematic areas of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, is a key priority for Tonga’s vision of the Forum.
The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders convene annually to develop collective responses to regional challenges and deliver on a shared vision for a resilient Pacific. Their vision is a region characterized by peace, harmony, security, social inclusion, and prosperity, enabling all Pacific peoples to lead free, healthy, and productive lives. This year’s gathering offers a crucial opportunity for leaders to address pressing issues, enhance regional cooperation, and pursue common goals for the Blue Pacific.
