The Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Wale, has demanded clarity from the Prime Minister and his Government regarding the recently signed agreements with China. In a statement released today, Hon Wale emphasized the seriousness of the matter, particularly highlighting two agreements among the nine signed, which are believed to be a comprehensive strategic agreement and a new policing security agreement.
Wale asserted that these developments raise numerous questions that the public deserves answers to. He further revealed that several government ministers were unaware of the details surrounding these agreements, leading to concerns about whether the Cabinet had given its approval for their signing.
“If these reports are true, it is simply outrageous,” said Wale. “The Prime Minister’s alleged decision to bypass the Cabinet and sign agreements that have implications for our national interest, jeopardize our national security, and create an uncomfortable situation with other regional bilateral and security partners is deeply concerning.”
The Opposition Leader cautioned against endangering Solomon Islands’ relations with Australia and the United States on security matters, emphasizing their long-standing presence in the region. He insisted that the nation’s best interests should always be prioritized in such endeavors.
Wale criticized the Prime Minister’s recent actions in China, which he believes have placed Solomon Islands in the forefront of the geopolitical struggle between China and the USA. He expressed dismay at the speed and extent with which these agreements were being concluded, suggesting that Solomon Islands stands alone in the region in this regard.
The Opposition Leader argued that the Prime Minister’s actions contradict his professed commitment to being a friend to all nations. He accused Sogavare of favoring China while adopting an adversarial stance towards the US and Australia, implying a selective friendship approach.
Wale reiterated that all agreements signed on behalf of the Solomon Islands people should be conducted transparently. He stressed the importance of public disclosure regarding the contents of agreements signed not only with China but also with the US, Australia, and all diplomatic partners. In light of this, he called upon the Prime Minister and his Government to make all recently signed agreements public.
