Solomon Islands to Participate in 79th UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister to Deliver National Statement.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Peter Shannel Agovaka, will lead the country’s delegation to the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The theme of this year’s assembly is “Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity.”
Several high-level meetings will take place on the sidelines of the UNGA, focusing on critical global issues such as the “Summit of the Future,” addressing sea level rise, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and the elimination of nuclear weapons. These meetings aim to strengthen international cooperation on issues like climate change, health, and peacebuilding.
Six government ministers from various Solomon Islands ministries, alongside their permanent secretaries, will participate in these discussions and deliver statements on behalf of the country. In addition to the main sessions, Solomon Islands officials will attend key meetings with Commonwealth Foreign Ministers, the Alliance of Small Island States, the G7+, and the Least Developed Countries group.
During the assembly, the Foreign Affairs Minister will also sign joint communiques to establish diplomatic relations with other United Nations member states and participate in treaty agreements. The Minister will deliver Solomon Islands’ national statement at the UNGA.
