Mendana Avenue sealing works progress as MID warns motorists of expected traffic congestion in central Honiara
The sealing works along the landside section of Mendana Avenue one of the busiest transport corridors within Honiara have now been completed and opened for public use.
Construction activities will now focus on the remaining sections requiring sealing at the Heritage Park Roundabout, Yacht Club Junction, and SIPA Intersection, all located on the seaside carriageway.
Works will then move to the final remaining road section between the Hot Bread Roundabout and the MID – HCC Roundabout. Due to the nature of the works, construction in this section will be carried out under carriageway closure conditions. During this period, one carriageway will remain open and operate as a two-way single carriageway to accommodate traffic flow.
The limited availability of alternative detour routes within this area presents a significant challenge to the contractor, particularly given the high level of commercial activity and the operational demands associated with the Central Market, International Port, and the main fuel storage facilities.
Traffic travelling from both the eastern and western sides of Honiara will be merged into a single lane through the work zone. As a result, congestion during this phase of the works will be unavoidable, and members of the public are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly.
Drivers and pedestrians are also urged to follow all guidance provided through road signage and traffic controllers from the RSIPF, HCC, and CCECC to help minimise congestion and ensure public safety.
Subject to weather conditions, works within the remaining section are targeted for completion by the end of July 2026.
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) apologises for any inconvenience caused during this period. However, once completed, road users can expect improved road conditions, safer travel, and better traffic flow through Honiara City.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, acknowledged the public for their continued patience and cooperation throughout the implementation of the road upgrade works.
“While these works may cause temporary inconvenience to motorists and the travelling public, they are necessary to improve the condition of our roads, enhance public safety, and support smoother traffic movement within Honiara City,” Mr. Lilia said.
He added that the Ministry remains committed to ensuring the works are completed efficiently and with minimal disruption to the public.
Road users are strongly urged to exercise caution when travelling through work zones, comply with all temporary traffic signs, observe speed limits, and follow directions provided by traffic controllers and construction personnel at all times to ensure the safety of both workers and the travelling public.
The upgrade works are being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, a collaboration between the Asian Development Bank and the Government of Solomon Islands.
