Heritage Park roundabout opens in Honiara, improving traffic flow under the LMCP road upgrade project
Pending the installation of traffic signs and road markings, the newly constructed Heritage Park roundabout is now fully completed and open to the public. This marks another key milestone under the ongoing road upgrade works in Honiara implemented through the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
The opening of the roundabout significantly improves traffic circulation within the central business area. Motorists travelling from Hibiscus Avenue and wishing to return towards the Point Cruz area may now use the corridor between CBSI and Telekom to access the roundabout and turn back. Vehicles heading towards White River should continue along the back route, turn right at Town Ground, then proceed left onto the West Side route. The Ministry of Finance roundabout can also be used as an alternative turning point for vehicles returning towards Point Cruz.
Meanwhile, construction works continue on the adjacent landside section between CBSI and NPF Plaza. Current activities include the installation of roadside kerbs and preparation of pavement layers in readiness for final asphalt surfacing. These works are essential to improving road strength, durability, and its ability to safely accommodate increasing traffic volumes.
The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is prioritising completion of this section before progressing to the next phase, which will extend from SIPA Junction through to the Hotbread Roundabout. Works will continue in a planned, staged sequence across Honiara’s main commercial corridor, ultimately reaching the MID/HCC Roundabout.
The upgrade works are particularly important given the road’s vulnerability to deterioration during heavy rainfall, a long-standing issue the project is addressing.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, welcomed the completion of the roundabout, describing it as an important improvement for traffic flow and road safety in the capital.
“This is an important achievement for Honiara. The opening of the Heritage Park roundabout will ease congestion in a busy part of the city while improving safety for all road users,” Mr. Lilia said.
He added that the broader rehabilitation programme is aimed at delivering long-term resilience for the transport network.
“We are focused on building roads that are more resilient to weather conditions and capable of supporting increasing traffic demand. We appreciate the public’s patience as works continue, and we assure everyone that the end result will be a safer and more reliable road network,” he said.
While every effort is being made to minimise disruption, motorists may still experience temporary delays and congestion due to limited working space, weather conditions, and other concurrent non-LMCP activities within Honiara. Continued cooperation and patience from the public, including motorists, pedestrians, and business operators, is sincerely appreciated.
Road users are reminded to exercise caution when travelling through active work zones, obey all traffic signage, observe speed limits, and follow instructions from traffic controllers to ensure safety.
These works are being delivered by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the LMCP, supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in partnership with the Solomon Islands Government.
