Three repaired timber bridges reopen in East Kwara’ae, improving safer road access and supporting local communities
Three timber bridges in East Kwara’ae, located along the Ward 15 and 16 road networks, were repaired by Radiant Enterprise, a local community group from East Malaita. The bridges were officially reopened to the public last Friday after undergoing minor repairs and maintenance earlier this year.
The repair works were carried out by Radiant Enterprise, a local group from East Malaita. These bridges, situated at Nazareth, Gethsemane, and Foubaba, had fallen into disrepair, posing safety concerns for passing vehicles. The scope of the contract included replacing the decking and strips, reinforcing log girders, and addressing abutments and scour control.
During a brief ceremony last Friday, Andrew Siru, managing director of Radiant Construction, expressed gratitude to the government for providing the necessary funds for the repairs. He also called on surrounding communities to take ownership of these bridges, which connect East Kwara’ae to East Kwaio and facilitate access to markets, services, Auki, and beyond.
Mr. Siru added that, as an emerging civil construction group, this project has provided valuable experience and boosted their confidence to undertake larger projects. He emphasized that this aligns with the government’s policies on local content and empowerment.
The ceremony was attended by staff of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), representatives of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force based in Auki, chiefs, and community members.
