Dog owners in Honiara must pay a $50 fee to register pets ahead of the city’s mass dog eradication operation in February 2025.
Dog owners in Honiara are now required to pay a $50 annual registration fee as part of efforts to manage the city’s growing stray dog population. The move comes ahead of a mass dog eradication operation scheduled for February 2025, targeting stray dogs and those without proper tags or licenses within the city’s boundaries.
The Honiara City Council (HCC) is enforcing the registration to ensure that pets are not unintentionally affected during the operation, which may involve the removal and euthanasia of unlicensed dogs under the Dog Ordinance.
To register a dog, owners can visit the Environmental Health Division at the Honiara City Council compound. Upon payment of the fee, owners will receive a registration tag with a unique number. Additionally, the Council will be conducting walk-in registration, with officers inspecting various areas within the city and distributing forms for dog registration.
In addition to the registration requirement, the HCC is taking further steps to control stray dog numbers, including enforcing dog licenses, urging pet owners to contain their dogs, and setting traps to capture and remove stray dogs.
Dog owners are also encouraged to neuter their pets to help reduce the stray dog population. Neutering prevents unwanted offspring, contributing to the overall effort to manage Honiara’s stray dog issue.
