Former police sergeant James Aitorea is sworn in as acting RSIPF Commissioner, replacing suspended Commissioner Ian Vaevaso.
Mr James Aitorea was sworn in as the acting Commissioner of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), with Governor-General Sir David Tiva Kapu administering the oath at Government House on 6 July 2026.
Mr Aitorea, a former police sergeant who resigned from the force some years ago, has been appointed as acting police commissioner while the substantive postholder, Mr Ian Vaevaso, is currently on suspension.
He took his oath before Governor-General Sir David Tiva Kapu to formalise his acting appointment, following advice from Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale under Sections 43(1) and (2) of the Solomon Islands Constitution.
In his new role, Acting Commissioner Aitorea expressed his commitment to enhancing community safety and strengthening the relationship between police and the public.
He outlined plans to address issues including crime prevention and police accountability during his tenure.
Mr Aitorea emphasised the importance of working with local communities and stakeholders to promote trust and transparency within the police force.
He also highlighted plans to support training programmes aimed at improving the skills and professionalism of police officers across the country.
Acting Commissioner Aitorea said the approach is expected to support efforts to reduce crime and encourage greater engagement between citizens and law enforcement.
He said prioritising open dialogue and community involvement will be important in building a safer and more inclusive society.
