Yacht Club road sealing completed as Honiara road upgrade works continue under connectivity project
The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) is pleased to announce that sealing works along the seaside section of the Yacht Club Junction on Mendana Avenue have just been completed and the upgraded road section is now open to the public.
Construction activities will now focus on the remaining sections requiring sealing at the Heritage Park Roundabout, SIPA Intersection, and the final road section between the Hot Bread Kitchen Roundabout and the MID – HCC Roundabout.
Due to the nature of the works, the final section will be constructed under carriageway closure conditions. One carriageway will remain open and operate as a two-way single carriageway to maintain traffic flow. Traffic from both the eastern and western sides of Honiara will be merged into a single lane through the work zone.
Given the limited availability of alternative routes and the high level of activity associated with the Central Market, International Port, and fuel storage facilities, traffic congestion during this phase of the project is expected and unavoidable. Road users are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and allow extra travel time.
Drivers and pedestrians are urged to follow all road signs and directions provided by traffic controllers from the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), Honiara City Council (HCC), and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to ensure public safety and minimise disruptions.
Subject to favourable weather conditions, the remaining works are expected to be completed by the end of July 2026.
Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Mike Qaqara, thanked the public for their continued patience and cooperation.
“While these works may cause temporary inconvenience, they are essential to improving road conditions, enhancing public safety, and supporting smoother traffic movement within Honiara City,” Mr. Qaqara said.
The road upgrade works are being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project, a partnership between the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Solomon Islands.
