
Solomon Islands and Australian officials discussed development priorities, cooperation and bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Matthew Wale and members of Cabinet met with senior Australian Government officials to discuss bilateral cooperation and areas of mutual interest between Solomon Islands and Australia.
The discussions focused on the Solomon Islands Government’s development priorities and the alignment of bilateral programs with national development objectives.
The Australian delegation was led by Elizabeth Peak, Head of the Office of the Pacific at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Justin Mohamed, Australia’s Ambassador for First Nations People, and Australia’s High Commissioner to Solomon Islands, Jeff Roach.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Wale outlined the Government’s approach to international partnerships and emphasized the importance of aligning external support with national priorities.
“This engagement reflects our Government’s approach to partnership, guided by our policies, our people and our long-term vision for the country,” Wale said.
The talks also provided an opportunity for the Government to present its key policy areas, including economic recovery, governance reform, human capital development and national security.
Cabinet ministers who participated in the discussions included:
- Gordon Darcy Lilo, Minister for Finance and Treasury
- Rick Houenipwela, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade
- Peter Kenilorea Jr., Minister for National Planning and Development Coordination
- John Tuhaika Jr., Minister for Police, National Security and Correctional Services
- Stephen Kumi, Minister for Education and Human Resources Development
Australia is Solomon Islands’ largest bilateral development partner and supports programs across economic, security and development sectors.
Discussions also covered areas of shared interest, including culture, traditional leadership and community development.
The meeting formed part of ongoing engagement between the Solomon Islands Government and Australia on bilateral cooperation and development priorities.
