PM Jeremiah Manele hosts ADB President Masato Kanda, strengthening Solomon Islands development partnership


Honiara, Solomon Islands, Tuesday 17 February 2026 – Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele yesterday received the President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Mr. Masato Kanda, during a courtesy visit to the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Prime Minister Manele warmly welcomed President Kanda and his delegation, congratulating ADB on establishing its Resident Mission in Honiara. He described the upgraded office as a significant milestone that strengthens the Bank’s presence in the country and enhances collaboration with the Government on national development priorities.
Acknowledging ADB’s long-standing support across key sectors, including connectivity, water and sanitation, and infrastructure, the Prime Minister highlighted that Solomon Islands now holds the second-largest ADB portfolio in the Pacific region, (after Papua New Guinea).

Discussions focused on strategic national priorities, aligned with the National Development Strategy 2016–2035. A key topic was the Tina River Hydropower Project, described by the Prime Minister as a critical national priority expected to be completed in 2028. He noted that improved access to affordable and reliable energy is essential for economic growth and higher living standards. President Kanda welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the importance of energy accessibility in supporting national development.
Prime Minister Manele also highlighted that the Government is planning and implementing national projects to coincide with two key milestones: Solomon Islands’ graduation from Least Developed Country status in 2027, and the 50th Independence Anniversary in 2028, ensuring that development initiatives support these landmark years.
President Kanda commended the Government’s reform efforts and leadership in promoting transparency and accountability, reaffirming ADB’s commitment to a continued partnership with Solomon Islands.
Both leaders reaffirmed the strong partnership between Solomon Islands and ADB, noting that the presence of the ADB Resident Mission in Honiara will provide direct access and strengthen the implementation of development initiatives, ensuring closer support for national priorities and delivering tangible benefits to communities across the country.
The official opening of the ADB Resident Mission in Honiara will take place today, Tuesday 17 February 2026.
The Solomon Islands Government will be represented at the ceremony by the Minister for Finance and Treasury, Hon. Rexon Annex Ramofafia, who also serves as Solomon Islands’ Governor on the ADB Board.
