MID appoints new Principal Works Officer in Kirakira to boost transport safety and infrastructure in Makira Ulawa Province.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s (MID) Land Transport Management Service Division (LTMSD) has announced the appointment of a new Principal Works Officer to oversee works operations in Kirakira town, Makira Ulawa Province (MUP).
Allan Dutton Hera’oa, a native of the province, was appointed earlier this year and recently completed his probationary training at the ministry’s works facility in Honiara.
Previously, Kirakira only had a senior works supervisor. The creation of this new role reflects MID’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure management and expanding technical capacity in provincial centers.
During his probation, Mr. Hera’oa completed training with the Vehicle Inspection Unit, the Government Vehicle Maintenance and Servicing Unit, and participated in administration and driver testing programs.
Speaking on his new role, Mr. Hera’oa outlined his plans for improving land transport management in the area:
“I will work closely with the provincial administration, police, and other stakeholders. There is a lot to address, including non-compliant vehicles, unlicensed drivers, and the development of work plans.”
He noted that his responsibilities will also extend to Ulawa Island, where there has been an increase in vehicle activity. Mr. Hera’oa emphasized the need for vehicle safety, especially in light of recent accidents in the area.
“We have experienced accidents recently that resulted in fatalities, and addressing this issue will be my top priority in collaboration with the provincial police team,” he said.
To support his duties, Mr. Hera’oa also intends to request resources, including an outboard motor engine, to facilitate inter-island travel.
In addition, he plans to conduct basic mechanical and safety training for drivers of government vehicles across various departments, including health, land and housing, education, agriculture, and the provincial administration in Kirakira.
Mr. Hera’oa brings experience from both the public and private sectors, having worked previously with the provincial government on vehicle maintenance and with several private companies in the province.
The MUP Provincial Premier Stanley Siapu and his team have welcomed the appointment, highlighting the need to improve government services and transport management in the growing urban center.
