UNICEF donates vehicle to MMERE to boost water management, energy access, and climate resilience efforts nationwide

The Ministry of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification (MMERE) today formally received a Toyota Prado vehicle from the United Nations Children’s Fund Solomon Islands, signifying a further consolidation of the longstanding partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Solomon Islands in advancing national priorities in water resource management and service delivery.
The handover ceremony, underscored the shared commitment of both parties to strengthening institutional capacity and enhancing operational reach, particularly within the critical areas of water, sanitation, and sustainable energy.
Delivering remarks at the ceremony, UNICEF Solomon Islands Field Officer (IOC), Abdiweli Mohamed, emphasized that the gesture transcends the mere provision of logistical support.
“This handover is emblematic of our enduring partnership and collective resolve to support the Ministry’s mandate in monitoring water systems and advancing sustainable and climate-resilient energy solutions,” he stated.
Mr. Mohamed further highlighted the growing urgency of addressing climate change and its impacts, noting that strengthened water resource management and the promotion of renewable energy solutions remain indispensable to both national development and global sustainability efforts.
He expressed confidence that the vehicle will significantly augment the Ministry’s operational capabilities, particularly in geographically remote and logistically challenging contexts. It is expected to facilitate water resource monitoring, support energy assessments across schools and health facilities, and contribute to ensuring equitable access to safe and clean water for communities.
Receiving the vehicle, Permanent Secretary of MMERE, Dr. Chris Vehe, conveyed the Ministry’s profound appreciation for UNICEF’s continued and valued support.
“This occasion marks an important milestone for the Ministry. UNICEF’s sustained technical and financial assistance has played a pivotal role in strengthening our water sector, particularly in the area of groundwater management. Access to safe drinking water remains fundamental to the health, well-being, and prosperity of our people, as well as to the realization of our national development aspirations,” Dr. Vehe remarked.
He reaffirmed that groundwater constitutes a strategic national asset, central to the Solomon Islands’ socio-economic advancement, and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to nurturing and sustaining productive partnerships with development partners.
Dr. Vehe further underscored the importance of accountability and stewardship in the use of the asset, calling on Ministry personnel to ensure its responsible utilization and proper maintenance in line with established policies and standards.
Director of the Water Resources Management Division, Richard Molea, acknowledged the practical significance of the support.
“This vehicle represents a critical operational asset that will enhance our capacity to extend services, improve efficiency in field operations, and strengthen the implementation of water resource management programmes, including surveys and technical assessments,” he said.
The vehicle will be deployed by the Water Resources Management Division to reinforce field-based operations and improve service delivery, particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.
The handover further reflects the shared commitment of UNICEF and the Government of Solomon Islands to advancing sustainable development outcomes, strengthening resilience to climate change, and ensuring inclusive access to safe and reliable water services for all.
