MHMS plans 2027 health services with Primary Health Care at the centre to improve health outcomes across Solomon Islands.
The Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has completed its 2027 Annual Operational Planning and Budget Workshop on 19th August aimed at strengthening evidence-based and integrated health planning and budgeting for 2027, with Primary Health Care at the centre, to improve health outcomes across Solomon Islands.
The workshop provided strategic policy, planning and budget guidance for the preparation of the 2027 Annual Operational Plans, ensuring alignment with Government priorities, the National Health Strategic Plan 2022–2031 and the GREAT Coalition policy agenda.
It also provided an opportunity to review health sector performance, evidence and lessons learned to identify priority health challenges, service delivery gaps and high-impact interventions for 2027.
A key focus of the workshop was to strengthen alignment between national programmes, provincial health priorities and available resources, including Solomon Islands Government and development partner funding ceilings, to support realistic and cost-effective planning.
The workshop further sought to enhance collaboration and accountability among national programmes, provincial health teams, development partners and other stakeholders to ensure coordinated planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting.
Speaking at the workshop on behalf of the Minister of Health and Medical Services and the Acting Permanent Secretary, Deputy Secretary Corporate Services, Mr. Layten Jacob, said the workshop comes at a critical time for the health sector.
“The realities demand that we pause, reflect and strategize as we plan for the years ahead. The people of Solomon Islands expect that, regardless of where they live, they have access to quality health care services when they need them. This calls for renewed commitment from all of us.”
Mr. Jacob noted that discussions during the workshop would be guided by two important and complementary strategic documents, which should inform the Ministry’s plans and investments over the next two years.
He also acknowledged and thanked donor partners for their continued contributions towards strengthening the health system and improving service delivery over the years. He reaffirmed that the Ministry will continue to work closely with development partners to support the health sector and improve health outcomes for the people of Solomon Islands.
Meanwhile, the workshop was attended by MHMS senior leadership, national programme managers, provincial health teams, the National Referral Hospital (NRH) team, donors and development partners, the Ministry of Finance and Treasury (MoFT), and other key stakeholders.
