Kirakira Wharf nears completion in Makira-Ulawa, improving safer and efficient maritime access by July 2026
Construction of the Kirakira Wharf in Makira-Ulawa Province is progressing well, with major works on the wharf foundation and access bridge now nearing completion. The project continues to move forward steadily toward delivering a safer and more efficient maritime facility for the province. The project has experienced some delays due to recent poor weather and sea conditions, notably during recent cyclone Maila, but is expected to be substantially complete by July 2026.
Works on the wharf foundations are almost complete, with only a few piles remaining to be installed at 1 of the 2 new mooring dolphins that are being provided to assist with ship berthing. Construction of the main wharf structure is also advancing with works currently focused towards completing pile caps, beam installation, and decking works at the main wharf ‘T-head’. Preparations are also being made for the installation of important wharf fixtures such as fenders and bollards as well as associated landside facilities.
Overall, the main wharf access bridge structure is close to completion with major structural works now completed and minor finishing works ongoing which includes installation of kerbs with fencing and lighting to follow. Construction of the southern mooring dolphin has been completed, with only fencing and pile protection remaining. Work on the northern mooring dolphin is expected to begin in mid-May, initially by forming an access and work platform, and continue through to the end of June 2026.
Development of onshore facilities has also now commenced. Site clearance for a passenger terminal building has already started while preparations for building works are ongoing with key construction materials being prepared for transfer to site. In addition, a short access road, linking the new wharf to the existing main road, will also be provided.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, welcomed the steady progress of the project and said the near completion of the Kirakira Wharf marks an important achievement for the Government and the people of Makira-Ulawa Province.
“This project is an important investment in our transport infrastructure. Once completed, the Kirakira Wharf will improve access, increase safety and efficiency of maritime services, and support economic activities in the province,” Mr Lilia said. He added that the Government remains committed to delivering quality infrastructure projects that will provide long-term benefits to communities.
The Kirakira Wharf project is part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a major infrastructure initiative led by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the Asian Development Bank and being implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation. The project aims to strengthen road and maritime transport infrastructure across the country to improve connectivity, support economic growth, and improve access to essential services.
The Solomon Islands Government remains committed to delivering sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure that improves the safety and efficiency of the country’s transport systems.
