SIEC updates PM Wale on electoral reforms, with new voter registration rollout planned for 2027
CHIEF Electoral Officer (CEO) Mr. Jasper Highwood Anisi paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Hon. Matthew Wale today to provide a comprehensive update on the ongoing institutional reforms led by the Solomon Islands Electoral Commission (SIEC).
During the briefing, Mr. Anisi announced that field operations for the country’s new voter registration system are officially scheduled to commence in 2027.
He said the Commission has already secured the necessary technology to support this rollout.
“We are prepared and the new kits to assist us in our work have already arrived,” Mr. Anisi confirmed.
The update comes during a period of significant institutional recovery for the SIEC.
Mr. Anisi briefed the Prime Minister on the impacts of the recent fire that destroyed the Commission’s office, as well as the profound loss of Deputy CEO Christina Mitini.
Despite these dual crises, the CEO emphasized that the commission has demonstrated deep resilience, successfully delivering three consecutive by-elections.
In response, Prime Minister Wale extended his formal sympathies to the SIEC family, honoring the memory of Ms. Mitini as one of the Commission’s most dedicated leaders.
Looking forward, the Prime Minister established a clear timeline for legislative and administrative progress.
He indicated that key electoral reforms must be finalized and ready by the end of this year.
Prime Minister Wale further outlined the government’s core reform priorities, emphasizing an urgent need to structurally improve the national electoral system.
The Prime Minister also tasked the CEO with exploring viable frameworks and technical platforms to enable diaspora voting, allowing Solomon Islands citizens living overseas to participate in future elections.
Prime Minister Wale commended the CEO and the electoral team for their continued dedication to rising above recent institutional challenges to safeguard the nation’s democratic processes.
