PM Wale and PM Albanese reaffirm strong Solomon Islands–Australia ties and shared regional priorities
PRIME Minister Hon. Matthew Wale has reaffirmed strong and enduring partnership with Australia following high-level bilateral talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese.
Prime Minister Wale expressed his sincere appreciation for the warm and generous welcome extended to him and his delegation, describing it as a reflection of the close and historic ties between the two countries.
The Australian Prime Minister emphasised the depth of the relationship, stating that Solomon Islands and Australia are “not only neighbours, but family” reaffirming Australia’s commitment to building the partnership into the future.
Prime Minister Wale acknowledged the significance of the relationship reiterating that Solomon Islands has always remained a trusted friend to Australia despite challenges faced over the years.
“Our partnership is grounded in history, mutual respect and strong people-to-people connections that continue to bind our nations together,” Prime Minister Wale said.
The Australian Prime Minister also acknowledged Solomon Islands’ leadership role as Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum highlighting the importance of Pacific countries working together as one family to shape their own future.
Both leaders discussed shared priorities including climate change, regional security and economic cooperation.
Prime Minister Wale acknowledged climate change as a key concern for Solomon Islands and the broader Pacific region.
Prime Minister Wale also acknowledged the valuable contribution of Solomon Islanders participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, noting their important role in supporting Australian industries while contributing to livelihoods back home.
The leaders further discussed regional security cooperation, including Australia’s Pacific Policing Initiative.
Prime Minister Wale reaffirmed Solomon Islands role as a responsible and committed security partner.
The Australian Prime Minister expressed his intention to visit Honiara in the near future which was welcomed by Prime Minister Wale as a positive step towards further strengthening bilateral relations.
