Australia supports justice sector initiatives, including a women’s workshop and new PSO headquarters in Honiara.
The Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs (MJLA) last week hosted its first Women in Justice Workshop, bringing together women from across the ministry to discuss career development, workplace experiences and balancing professional and family responsibilities.
Held at the Honiara Hotel, the workshop featured presentations from women working in the justice sector, including Her Ladyship Justice Garo, who shared reflections on her career in the judiciary and professional development.
Representatives from the Australian High Commission attended the event, including Minister Counsellor Stephanie Aeuckens, who addressed participants. The program also included a networking dinner where legal policy adviser Lauren Murray shared her career experiences working in Australia and across the Pacific region.
The workshop was followed by the official opening of the Public Solicitor’s Office (PSO) new headquarters in Honiara. The refurbished facility was supported through the Australia–Solomon Islands Partnership for Justice (ASIP-J) program.
According to the Public Solicitor’s Office, the upgraded premises provide improved facilities for delivering legal services, including support for people with disabilities, young people and victims of family violence.
Public Solicitor George Gray and Deputy Public Solicitor Chris Rarumae acknowledged the completion of the project and the support provided through the partnership program.
Australia has committed approximately SBD 350 million through the ASIP-J program to support justice sector initiatives in Solomon Islands. The program aims to strengthen institutions and improve access to justice through cooperation between the two countries.
