PM Jeremiah Manele marks World Press Freedom Day, reaffirming support for media freedom and responsible journalism.

Honiara, Solomon Islands, Monday 4 May 2026 – Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele today joined members of the media fraternity to mark World Press Freedom Day 2026, attending the national event in Honiara as Guest of Honour.
In his keynote address, the Prime Minister acknowledged the important role of the media in informing the public, strengthening democratic processes, and contributing to peace and national development.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to upholding press freedom and maintaining the independence of the media, while also encouraging responsible, balanced, and accurate reporting.
“Journalism today is not defined by being first, but by being right,” Prime Minister Manele said.
This year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” reflects the critical role of media in promoting informed, peaceful, and resilient societies.
The Prime Minister reminded that peace should not be taken for granted, noting that Solomon Islands is a country that has lived through conflict, and that peace remains fragile and must be actively protected. He said the media plays an important role in safeguarding unity and stability.
Against this backdrop, the Prime Minister also acknowledged the challenges faced by the media sector, including the impact of the evolving digital landscape, resource constraints, and the need for continued collaboration across Government and the media.
The Prime Minister encouraged the Media Association of Solomon Islands (MASI), as the representative body of the media, to utilise the established channels for engagement with Government to address industry challenges and support the continued development of the sector.
The Prime Minister commended journalists across the country for their ongoing contribution to nation-building and the promotion of truth and accountability.
