Australia provides aid to Solomon Islands following Cyclone Maila, supporting relief and recovery efforts
Australia is providing humanitarian assistance to the Solomon Islands following the impacts of Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila.
An initial AUD 1.5 million (SBD 8.6 million) has been allocated to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts after a state of disaster was declared for Western and Choiseul provinces.
Two Royal Australian Air Force aircraft arrived in Honiara carrying Australian Defence Force personnel and relief supplies, including emergency shelter materials, hygiene kits, lighting equipment, and community tents for distribution to affected areas.
Supplies are being delivered through a regional assistance hub in Munda established by the National Disaster Management Office. Aircraft also transported members of the National Emergency Response Team to support coordination and operations at the hub.
Australia is coordinating closely with NDMO to align assistance with priority needs. Government representatives were present at the arrival of personnel and supplies in Honiara.
The response reflects ongoing cooperation between Australia and Solomon Islands in disaster preparedness and humanitarian support.
