Acting Opposition Leader Dean Kuku urges urgent action over scholarship delays and policy uncertainty affecting students and teachers.
ACTING Leader of Opposition Hon Dean Kuku has called for urgent intervention by the Government over ongoing delays in scholarship confirmations and growing uncertainty-surrounding policies affecting teachers undertaking approved studies.
Hon Kuku said the Opposition Office has received credible reports that delays in scholarship confirmation and deployment have caused students to commence studies late, struggle to secure accommodation, and miss critical academic instruction.
He said these disruptions are not isolated cases but appear to reflect recurring administrative failures within the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.
“Education is a national investment. Administrative inefficiency must not be allowed to undermine the future of our young people and working professionals seeking further qualifications,” the Acting Opposition Leader said.
Hon Kuku said scholarship programmes represent a strategic investment in the human capital and long-term development of Solomon Islands.
However, he said investment must be matched with competent administration, clear policy direction, and accountable leadership.
Hon Kuku said the Opposition is seriously concerned with;
- Delays in finalising and communicating scholarship awards;
- Lack of timely travel and accommodation arrangements for students;
- Absence of support mechanisms for students who have missed academic commencement dates; and
- Uncertainty surrounding the legal and policy framework governing teacher salaries during approved study leave.
“Our students and teachers must not bear the cost of poor coordination or unclear policy implementation. Government support at this critical stage of their academic journey must enable progress and not hinder it,” he stated.
The Opposition is calling on the Education Minister to;
- Immediately finalise and formally communicate all outstanding scholarship awards;
- Ensure urgent logistical arrangements for affected students;
- Put in place remedial academic support for those who have missed commencement dates; and
- Publicly clarify the legal authority and policy basis regarding payment of teacher salaries during scholarship study leave.
The Acting Opposition Leader said these matters are of significant public interest and, if not addressed promptly and transparently, may warrant further parliamentary scrutiny.
“The Opposition remains committed to constructive engagement to ensure that education policies are administered fairly, lawfully, and in the best interests of all Solomon Islanders,” he said.
