Drainage upgrades on Mendana Avenue aim to ease flooding, improve safety, and support road rehabilitation in Honiara
Drainage improvement works are currently underway at the Commonwealth Street intersection along the seaside carriageway of Mendana Avenue in Honiara’s Central Business District.
The project involves upgrading the existing intersection with additional underground drainage to improve stormwater flow and reduce flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. The works are expected to be completed by the end of this week, subject to the relocation of utility services.
Once the drainage works along the seaside carriageway are completed, the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will move to the landside carriageway to begin similar drainage improvements. Following these works, CCECC will proceed with improvements to the road, kerbs, parking areas, and footpaths.
Road users and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution when approaching the construction zones. Construction activities, heavy machinery movement, and temporary obstructions may pose safety risks or result in minor delays.
“Slow down, follow instructions from traffic controllers on-site, and remain alert at all times. Work will continue for the next six months or so, and traffic congestion will be unavoidable. While this may be frustrating, the travelling public is kindly asked to exercise patience and plan their journeys accordingly during the rehabilitation of Mendana Avenue (from Town Ground to the Honiara City Council Roundabout).
“We thank the public for their cooperation and understanding as these essential works progress to improve safety and drainage capacity along this busy road corridor.”
This project forms part of the broader road component of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a collaborative initiative led by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The Transport Infrastructure Management Services Division of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) continues to provide oversight throughout all phases of the project’s implementation.
