Solomon Ports Board inspects port operations and major projects to strengthen oversight, efficiency and future development.
The Solomon Ports Board of Directors has conducted a comprehensive visit to key operational and development areas at the Port of Honiara to strengthen its understanding of port operations and monitor major infrastructure projects.
Led by Interim Chairman Robert Luke Iroga, the visit provided Directors with first-hand insight into Solomon Ports’ systems, facilities, processes and workforce.
The visit began at the Terminal Operating System (TOS) Building, where the TOS team briefed the Board on the system used to support container terminal operations.
The presentation covered the system’s key functions and how it supports efficiency, coordination and container movement management.
The Board then visited the Berth Planning Building, where Directors met staff responsible for berth planning and coordinating vessel and container operations.
Directors also toured the container terminal yard, meeting frontline staff and observing cargo-handling activities and processes.
As part of the visit, the Board travelled to the construction site of the Honiara International Terminal Berth 1 Redevelopment Project, where they met contractors and received an update on construction progress.
The site visit provided the Board with a better understanding of the project’s current stage and its importance to the future capacity and capability of the Port of Honiara.
Mr Iroga said first-hand knowledge of operational facilities and processes was important for informed decision-making at Board level.
“It is important for the Board to see first-hand how our operations are being carried out, meet the staff responsible for delivering these services, and understand the systems and infrastructure supporting the port. This helps ensure that we make sound and informed decisions about the future direction of Solomon Ports.”
He said maintaining customer and port-user confidence in Solomon Ports’ ability to provide efficient and reliable services remained important, while recognising the need for continued investment in infrastructure and operational capacity.
Mr Iroga added that the visit reassured the Board that Solomon Islands Ports Authority continues to maintain high standards of operational efficiency and has sufficient capacity and space to meet customer needs.
Solomon Ports Chief Executive Officer George Rausi, who led the Board through the facilities, said the visit helped ensure the Board and management remained aligned on the port’s strategic direction.
“It is good for the Board to visit our facilities and see our operations first-hand. This allows the Board to make sound and informed decisions based on what they physically see and understand from the people involved in our daily operations.”
Mr Rausi also highlighted the importance of ensuring Board and management decisions remain aligned with the Solomon Ports Master Plan, which provides the strategic direction for the port’s long-term development.
“Especially since we have the Port Master Plan, the decisions made by the Board and Management must be aligned with that strategic direction. I believe the Board is in a better position to do so, particularly after having the opportunity to see our operations, facilities, and development projects first-hand.”
The visit forms part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to maintain close engagement with operational teams and strengthen its understanding of Solomon Ports’ activities, challenges and future development priorities.
