Australia announces a SBD56 million education package to support schools, training centres and learning access
Australia has supported the education sector with a 56 million dollar education package. This was confirmed today at a press conference attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale.
Prime Minister Albanese said he was pleased to announce the support package, saying it reflects the priorities of the Solomon Islands Government.
“Today I’m very pleased to announce a 56 million Solomon dollar package of education support for Solomon Islands. We know, as we heard today, this is a priority for Prime Minister Wale,” Albanese said.
In his statement, Albanese confirmed that the support will help provide school materials such as books for primary schools and will also support upgrades to rural training centres across the country.
“It will provide for an upgrade in rural training centres across the Solomons to provide the skills for Solomon Islanders to build their future, and it will support the government’s policy to move towards further access to education for the people of Solomon Islands,” he said.
Prime Minister Albanese said the package is in line with Solomon Islands Government policy, and that Australia is keen to continue supporting the education sector.
Speaking at the Government Policy Launch on Monday, Prime Minister Matthew Wale said education is more than just free schooling, and that the GREAT Government is committed to reviving the sector as one of its key priorities.
“If education is the pathway through which nations liberate themselves from poverty, ignorance and inequality, then surely education cannot simply be regarded as a private responsibility. It must become a shared national responsibility.”
