Prime Minister Matthew Wale pledges recovery support for communities devastated by Cyclone Maila
PRIME Minister Matthew Wale says life will never be the same again for communities devastated by Cyclone Maila.
The Prime Minister expressed deep sympathy during his visit to the hard-hit communities of Keara in Ranoggah and Iriqila in North Vella La Vella, Western Province.
Arriving in the affected areas, the Prime Minister walked among the wreckage past fallen homes, broken schools and families trying to rebuild from almost nothing.
Standing with families who have lost not only their homes but their sense of normalcy, the Prime Minister acknowledged the deep pain and uncertainty they now face.
“My heart aches for you,” Prime Minister Wale said.
“What you have gone through is something no family should ever endure. But I want you to know that you are not alone. We will rebuild, and we will come back stronger together.”
The Prime Minister and his delegation witnessed first-hand the scale of destruction, with dozens of homes flattened and families now sheltering in makeshift tents.
Gardens that once sustained livelihoods are gone, children are without proper classrooms, and access to basic health services has been severely disrupted.
Describing the situation as heart-breaking, Prime Minister Wale said the suffering of these communities is shared across the nation.
“I have seen your struggles, I have listened to your stories, and I carry them with me,” he said. “Our nation grieves with you. Your pain is our pain.”
He confirmed that urgent instructions have been issued to fast-track damage assessment reports, allowing government to quickly mobilize and redirect resources where they are needed most.
Despite his government being only two weeks in office, the Prime Minister stressed that their commitment to recovery is unwavering.
“We may be a two week old government, but our duty to you is clear,” he said.
As he concluded his visit, the Prime Minister spent time with families offering quiet words of comfort, listening to their stories, and reminding them that even in their darkest hour, they are not forgotten.
