PM Jeremiah Manele refuses to resign as Solomon Islands Parliament debates no confidence motion today
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele has stood his ground ,refusing to resign as Parliament begins debating a Motion of No Confidence against his administration.
The motion, moved by the Member of Parliament for South Vella Lavella, Frederick Kologeto, has now allowed for debate of the motion of no confidence
Responding to calls for his immediate resignation, Prime Minister Manele told the chamber he remains committed to the democratic process and intends to oversee the debate to its final result.
He welcomed the challenge, describing the constitutional significance of the motion as “sacred.”
βI will not resign until it is proven at the end of the debate on this floor,β the Prime Minister stated firmly.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Kologeto urged the Prime Minister to step down voluntarily, citing an undeniable shift in the balance of power between the government and the opposition.
He described the proceedings as a testimony to the strength of the Solomon Islands as a young democracy.
βThe situation is undeniable and undisputed with the strength on the majority and minority,β Mr. Kologeto said.
He told the House that the matter is being treated with the utmost gravity, adding, βThis matter is not taken lightly.β
The Speaker of Parliament, Patterson Oti, presided over the session and granted the floor for the motion to proceed.
Speaker Oti noted that while the motion is significant, it is not unprecedented in the history of the Solomon Islands’ legislature.
He said that this is not the first time such a motion has occurred and that many previous governments have navigated similar challenges.
The debate is now underway as both sides of the House argue the merits of the governmentβs continued mandate.
Under the laws of the Solomon Islands, a Prime Minister must command an absolute majority of the 50-seat Parliament to survive the challenge and remain in power.
