Construction of the new Aviation Complex near Honiara International Airport reaches a milestone as superstructure works begin
Construction of the new Aviation Complex Building near Honiara International Airport has reached a key milestone, with superstructure works now underway. The design-and-build contract, implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) and supported by the World Bank under the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), is progressing steadily and remains on track to deliver critical infrastructure improvements for the country’s aviation sector.
The contractor has commenced superstructure works following the completion of the building’s substructure. Under-slab backfilling activities were completed on 12 November 2025, with field density tests confirming full compliance with the required design bearing capacity. Construction of the ground floor slab and edge beams took place from 10 to 21 November 2025 in sequenced sections to accommodate designated construction joints, including mesh installation, formwork, and concrete pouring in accordance with approved design specifications.
On 6 November 2025, a World Bank team conducted technical and occupational health and safety monitoring and identified gaps in safety practices, which are currently being addressed by the contractor. In addition, a material factory inspection was jointly undertaken by the engineer, contractor, and supplier following confirmation of material approvals.
Looking ahead, the contractor will continue advancing superstructure works, with a focus on completing columns and masonry walls in the coming months. Progress is expected to be accelerated through strengthened coordination, planning, and site supervision to ensure timely and effective delivery of works.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Communication and Aviation, Alwyn Danitofea, welcomed the progress to date and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the new aviation complex.
“The commencement of superstructure works marks an important milestone for the Aviation Complex Building, which is a critical investment in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of aviation operations at Honiara International Airport. Despite some challenges, we are encouraged by the progress made and the corrective actions being implemented on site,” Danitofea said.
Beyond the Honiara Aviation Complex, SIRAP2 continues to advance a range of infrastructure projects across the country. These include the construction of Noro roads, four new bridges in Malaita, upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and the Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, installation of air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, rehabilitation of 21 kilometres of the East Road between Baratolo and Atori, and sealing of 12 kilometres of the North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
