Shortlands relief supplies are being distributed after a SBD100,000 fundraising campaign for Cyclone Maila recovery
The Honiara-based Shortlands Islands Disaster Response Committee has officially concluded its fundraising campaign and donation drive and has now moved into the distribution phase.
The committee raised more than 100,000 Solomon Islands dollars through contributions from individuals, families, churches, community groups, and businesses to support communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila.
The funds were used to purchase essential relief supplies, including more than 200 bales of rice, empty jerry cans, boxes of nails, mixed clothing bales, and freight costs to transport the supplies to the Shortland Islands.
Additional donations of cooking utensils, clothing, water bottles, detergents, and other household items were also received to support affected communities.
The distribution of relief supplies began on Monday, July 6, 2026, with deliveries first made to communities on Mono Island.
The distribution team then continued to Gaomae, Harapa, and Kamaleai, while residents from surrounding villages collected their allocated supplies from designated distribution points.
MV Airi is currently at Nila and will continue its journey across the Shortland Islands to deliver relief supplies to the remaining affected communities.
The committee says it is working closely with chiefs, community leaders, and disaster coordinators to ensure the distribution process is carried out fairly and transparently, with priority given to communities most severely affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila.
The committee has thanked all individuals, organisations, and businesses who contributed to the relief effort through financial support, donated items, fundraising activities, and volunteer assistance.
Committee representatives remain on board MV Airi to accompany the relief supplies throughout the distribution process.
The committee says further updates will be provided as the distribution continues.
