HCC to launch Naghoniara Vaka Flea Market 2026 to promote tourism, culture, and local business in Honiara.
The Honiara City Council (HCC) Culture and Tourism Division is set to launch the inaugural Naghoniara Vaka Flea Market 2026, a major community initiative designed to celebrate Independence Week while promoting local enterprise, cultural preservation, and tourism.
The three-day launch event will run from 5–7 July 2026 at the Lawson Tama Stadium Carpark, operating daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Following its Independence Week debut, the market will transition into a permanent Sunday fixture, providing a consistent platform for local vendors, artisans, and entrepreneurs.
Speaking to Tavuli News, HCC Chief Tourism Officer Grainy Sota said the initiative marks a significant milestone in the Council’s efforts to link tourism development with grassroots economic empowerment.
“The Naghoniara Vaka Flea Market is more than just a place to buy and sell products,” Sota said. “It is a community initiative that brings people together, celebrates our cultural diversity, and creates direct opportunities for local businesses and families to benefit from tourism.”
According to HCC, the market is strategically designed to stimulate the local economy by lowering barriers to entry for small businesses, artisans, and food vendors. Beyond immediate commerce, the initiative also focuses on environmental sustainability through the promotion of recycling, waste reduction, and eco-friendly products to support a cleaner urban environment.
It further emphasises social inclusion by ensuring equal economic opportunities for both women and men, while also providing accessible facilities for persons living with disabilities. In addition, the programme includes capacity-building initiatives such as training, promotional support, and business development opportunities aimed at strengthening local entrepreneurship.
The Significance of ‘Naghoniara Vaka’
The market’s name carries deep historical and cultural significance for the capital. “Naghoniara” is the indigenous name for the area where Honiara was established before becoming the national capital. Translated as “Eastern Wind,” it honours the city’s traditional landowners and their enduring legacy.
Paired with “Vaka” (meaning ship or canoe), the name symbolises the collective journey of the Honiara City Council and its people. It draws on the Pacific tradition of voyaging, reflecting resilience, unity, and a shared ocean identity.
The inaugural event will be held under the theme: “Honouring Our Traditional Landowners, Celebrating Our Heritage, and Sailing Together Towards a Stronger Community.”
Following the official launch, stall applications will remain open to all Honiara residents throughout the year. Visitors to the Lawson Tama Stadium Carpark can expect a range of locally made handicrafts, traditional foods, clothing, household goods, and family-friendly entertainment.
