Solomon Islands Manaaki NZ scholars farewelled at a pre-departure briefing hosted by the New Zealand High Commission
The latest cohort of Solomon Islands students studying under the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme were farewelled this week at a pre-departure briefing and dinner hosted by the New Zealand High Commission to Solomon Islands.
The event brought together 22 tertiary scholarship recipients, alumni and government officials to prepare scholars for their upcoming studies in New Zealand and the Pacific.
In his remarks, the New Zealand High Commissioner to Solomon Islands His Excellency Jonathan Curr congratulated the scholars on their achievement and welcomed them into the wider Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships community.
“This cohort of scholars represents some of the brightest emerging talent in Solomon Islands. Their achievements reflect dedication, resilience, and a commitment to serving their communities. New Zealand is proud to support the scholars on their academic and professional journey” he said.
The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships Programme offers world-class education, equipping graduates with the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to contribute to their country’s national development. The graduates join a distinguished alumni network that includes politicians, senior public servants, leading professionals, and influential figures across civil society.
Speaking to the scholars, the High Commissioner emphasised “As you head overseas, you carry with you not only your own aspirations but the hopes of your families and communities. We look forward to seeing the impact you make while studying, and the even greater impact you will have when you return home to contribute to Solomon Islands’ development.”
High Commissioner Curr emphasised that the Manaaki Scholarships are not only an academic opportunity, but a chance to build lasting friendships. While on scholarship, students gain new friends and colleagues. They also strengthen ties between Solomon Islands and New Zealand, ties that matter now more than ever in a world that depends on cooperation and understanding.
Among the guests was New Zealand alumni and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development, Ms Linda Wate. Deputy Secretary Linda motivated the students with stories of her scholarship experience and urged them to use the opportunity to help shape their country’s future.
Applications for tertiary scholarships under the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships Programme will open in early 2026. Information about the 2026 selection round will be made available on the New Zealand High Commission Facebook Page website.
