Preparatory works for the Ahanga Wharf Project are progressing, with equipment delivered and piling works set to begin.
Preparatory works for the Ahanga Wharf Project in Renell and Bellona Province are progressing well, with significant milestones already achieved ahead of the commencement of major construction activities.
The contractor has successfully established site facilities at Ahanga, while the majority of foundation pile materials and key construction equipment have already been delivered to the project site. This marks an important step forward in readiness for the next phase of construction works.
In Honiara, fabrication of the majority of precast concrete units for the wharf superstructure has also been completed. These precast components are currently awaiting transportation to the Ahanga worksite and will be shipped to site as construction activities progress and materials are required.
During early site investigations and preparatory works, ground conditions at the project site were found to differ from initial expectations. As a result, the contractor undertook the procurement of additional specialised piling equipment to ensure the works can proceed safely and efficiently.
The additional piling equipment has now arrived in Honiara and is expected to be transferred to the Ahanga worksite this weekend. Installation of foundation piles is anticipated to commence shortly after the equipment arrives on site.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, welcomed the progress being made and acknowledged the efforts undertaken to address the site challenges.
“Despite the unforeseen ground conditions encountered at the site, we are pleased to see that the contractor has responded quickly by mobilising additional specialised equipment to ensure the project continues to move forward,” Mr. Lilia said.
He added that the Ahanga Wharf Project remains a key infrastructure investment for Renell and Bellona Province and will significantly improve shipping access, transportation services, and economic opportunities for surrounding communities once completed.
The Ahanga Wharf Project forms part of the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), a major infrastructure initiative led by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the Asian Development Bank and implemented by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation.
The LMCP aims to strengthen road and maritime transport infrastructure across the country to improve connectivity, support economic growth, and enhance access to essential services for communities throughout Solomon Islands.
Once completed, the Ahanga Wharf Project is expected to significantly strengthen connectivity and support the long-term social and economic development of Renell and Bellona Province.
