SIART supports Gold Ridge women farmers with 300 broilers, improved housing and training to increase poultry production.
Friday 28 August, Honiara – The Gold Ridge Women Farmers’ Poultry Project has acknowledged the Solomon Islands Rural Agriculture Transformation (SIART) Project for supporting local farmers in our rural communities especially women.
Chairlady, Mrs. Joyce Pohungke said with support from the SIART Project, they have been able to improve their poultry housing and increase the number of broiler birds per building to 500 birds at one time.
On Thursday 27 August 2026, the first group of women from the Gold Ridge Women Farmers Poultry received 300 broiler birds through the continuous support from the SIART Project.
“In six weeks, the women are expected to sell their birds at $150 to $200 per bird to our neighbouring communities and at the Gold Ridge Mining Company,” Chairlady, Mrs. Pohungke, said.
The Gold Ridge Women Farmers’ Poultry Project are among 32 Agribusiness Producer Organizations (ABPOs) in Guadalcanal Province who have grant funding agreements with the SIART Project.
Apart from increased broiler production and sales, the SIART Project is also supporting the women’s poultry project improve capacity building of ABPO members through climate resilience poultry trainings and improve existing poultry units to accommodate maximum number of birds using standard spacing and to allow adequate air ventilation for healthy birds.
As part of the support, SIART has also provided them with office equipment, stationaries for proper administration work.
The SIART Project is a World Bank funded initiative which is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL).
World Bank Resident Representative for Solomon Islands, Mr. Bernard Harborne, visited the Poultry farm at Gold Ridge on Friday 21 August, where he engaged with local farmers and hear about the progress of their project and the positive impacts on rural life.
The Gold ridge Community Women Association comprises of more than 200 members who are residing within and around Gold Ridge area. This group has been producing poultry (Broiler) since year 2021.
