New Prime Minister Matthew Wale urges youth to be productive after his election as Solomon Islands’ 14th PM.
“Young people must be part of the country’s progress and productivity,” newly elected Prime Minister Matthew Cooper Wale said after securing the prime ministership in a 26–22 parliamentary vote, becoming the Solomon Islands’ 14th Prime Minister.
The Member for Aoke Langalanga and new Prime Minister encouraged young people to seek opportunities and contribute positively to their communities.
“Do not cause trouble on the streets of Honiara, Auki, Gizo or elsewhere. Follow guidance. If you do not have formal employment, go fishing or do something productive. We want to create an economy where everybody participates and benefits,” he said.
Prime Minister Wale said his vision was to build an economy where more people could become entrepreneurs and improve their lives.
“One of the changes we want to see is an economy where more people can become entrepreneurs and improve their lives. We cannot achieve it overnight, but together we can start,” he said.
Speaking during his first media doorstop interview following the result, Prime Minister Wale said he was honoured to lead the country.
“It’s a great honour and a wonderful privilege. This is a great country, and to serve the beautiful people of this country is something I will never take lightly,” he said.
Prime Minister Wale acknowledged the limited time remaining in the current term of government but said he was determined to make meaningful progress.
“I have said many things over the years about what we must do for the country, and I will do my utmost to move it in that direction. Obviously, we cannot do everything in two years, but I do not want to be accused of doing nothing,” he said.
“We want to do as much as we possibly can in the short time we have, with the limited resources available to the government. But I promise you, change is coming.”
Mr Wale also thanked Solomon Islanders for remaining patient throughout the political impasse over recent weeks.
“I thank all Solomon Islanders who have followed the leadership process over the past few weeks. Now that it has come to a conclusion, we must all come together and work together,” he said.
