Four Solomon Islanders awarded 2026 MEXT scholarships will study in Japan, marking continued education ties.
This year, four citizens of the Solomon Islands were awarded the 2026 Japanese Government (MEXT – Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship to pursue studies in Japan. On 25 March, the recipients paid a courtesy call on His Excellency HIGUCHI Keiichi prior to their departure.
The scholarship recipients are:
- Research Student, Ms Elnisha Talota (Kyushu University)
- Research Student, Mr David Aram (Hokkaido University)
- Research Student, Mr Kenneth Leni Gatu (Komatsu University)
- Undergraduate Student, Ms Ariella Hoala Levo (ABK Gakkan Japanese Language School)
With these awardees, the total number of Solomon Islanders who have studied in Japan under the MEXT Scholarship Program since 1993 will reach 102.
During the courtesy call, Ambassador Higuchi congratulated the students and acknowledged the challenges they may encounter while living in Japan, including language barriers and cultural adjustments. Drawing from his own experience living abroad, he noted that adapting to a new environment can be demanding but also rewarding. He encouraged the students to remain positive, perform to the best of their abilities, and maintain their physical and mental well-being.
The students expressed a mixture of excitement and concern as they prepare for their studies. They indicated a strong interest in learning about Japan’s technology, skills, and culture, while also noting concerns about language, particularly upon arrival. Overall, they conveyed optimism about the opportunities ahead.
The four students are scheduled to depart for Japan in the first week of April.
The Government of Japan currently offers five types of MEXT scholarships for applicants from Solomon Islands. Applications for four categories—Undergraduate, Specialized Training College, College of Technology, and Research—are expected to open in April 2027. The Teacher Training category is scheduled to open in January. Interested applicants are encouraged to refer to official information sources for application details and preparation guidelines.
