Fatboys Resort launches SSI-certified dive centre in Gizo, boosting tourism and local employment in Western Province.
Fatboys Resort, located on Mbabanga Island near Gizo, has officially entered the Solomon Islands’ growing dive tourism sector with the launch of a certified dive centre.
Positioned in the Western Province—renowned for some of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems—the resort now offers SCUBA diving experiences ranging from historic World War II wrecks to vibrant coral reefs and underwater walls teeming with marine life.
The dive centre, fully certified by Scuba Schools International (SSI), is equipped with modern facilities including a wet room, 20 complete sets of dive gear, and three custom dive boats. Staff includes an SSI Divemaster Instructor, two certified divemasters, and experienced local boat captains, with additional dive professionals in training.
Popular local dive sites include, Grand Central Station – home to over 275 fish species, Joe’s Wall – a steep underwater wall beginning in shallow waters and descending beyond 60 metres, Kennedy Island – a historic WWII site suitable for drift diving and dive certification courses, wrecks such as the Toa Maru, a 440-foot Japanese freighter, and US aircraft lie nearby in accessible shallow waters.
Fatboys caters to all skill levels, from novice to experienced divers, and also offers snorkelling tours for non-divers.
Tourism Solomons Acting CEO Dagnal Dereveke welcomed the addition of Fatboys Dive Centre, stating it enhances the country’s reputation as a world-class dive destination.
“The dive sector continues to be a major driver of international visitation,” Dereveke said. “Expanding high-quality dive infrastructure not only raises the Solomon Islands’ global profile but also creates opportunities for local employment and business growth.”
The new dive operation aligns with national efforts to strengthen tourism through sustainable and locally inclusive development.
